The memorial stone commemorates dramatic events in 1973. After the Swedish government agreed to form a large municipality from the municipalities of Dorotea, Åsele and Fredrika, six determined men protested against the decision on March 16. They were supported by many angry residents of Dorotea, who lay down on the streets and refused to eat anything until the government revoked its decision. Dorotea's hunger strike attracted national attention. Dorotea regained its independence on January 1, 1980.
