Status May 2022: Grottoes are closed at least until the end of 2022, possibly also 2023 due to maintenance work. Wasn't obvious to us on the homepage. It is possible to visit the exhibition (and small show with plastic volcanic rock replicas, I wouldn't go there for that), is on PT and EN.

Hiking

The caves are closed for a year! But you can watch a film about the creation of Madeira and visit the museum for 5 euros. It is also very worth seeing for children, as the volcanic activity is very well represented there! The shop is also open there. Outside around the caves there are beautiful parks and cascades.
