Located on the old trade route from Strasbourg to Basel, the history of today's Guémar goes back to the 14th century, when the then existing settlement around the seat of the Molkenburg and the Saint-Léger church were fortified by a city wall with defense towers.

Guémar is located in the Upper Rhine Valley between Colmar and Sélestat, just under 6 km east of Ribeauvillé. As a former medieval fortress of the Lords of Ribeauvillé, the remains of fortifications from the 14th century (high gate and city wall towers) and the castle from the 10th century (Molkenburg) are still visible in this place.
