Bergheim was already settled in Roman times.
In the Middle Ages, Bergheim was a free city under the rule of Rappoltstein. In 1313 the city received the right to mint money and levy customs duties.
From 1871 until the end of the First World War, Bergheim belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the district of Rappoltsweiler in the district of Upper Alsace.

There is a strange figure in Bergheim in Alsace. The
Lack'mi represents a person who was persecuted for debts or untimely, excusable crimes and found refuge in Bergheim. Through her gestures she makes fun of her pursuers.
This half-relief was donated by a Bergheim resident in 1997 after the original from 1534 disappeared in 1852 and has not resurfaced until.
