Tips

  • Evangelical Lutheran church in the Romantic architectural style in the heart of Eutin, not far from the market square.
The church with its massive, slightly leaning tower is an indispensable part of the city's skyline - especially the market square. It is not possible to say exactly when the church was built. It is assumed that Bishop Gerold had a wooden chapel built at the current location between 1155 and 1163. After examining the artistic and craft features, it is assumed that construction could have begun in 1180 at the earliest and was probably only completed under Bishop Berthold (1210 - 1230). The church is a Romanesque building. It has a basilica 40 meters long and is therefore characterized as an episcopal collegiate church. St. Michael's Church was the largest church building in the surrounding area. From 1309 onwards, the choir and apse were replaced by the Gothic choir that still exists today. The rise of the bourgeoisie in the 13th century led to disputes between the representatives of civil and spiritual power in the neighboring Hanseatic city of Lübeck. For example, Lübeck's Bishop Burkhard fled several times from Lübeck Cathedral to his personal residence in Eutin and founded a collegiate foundation there, which promoted the conversion of St. Michael's Church from Romanesque to Gothic style. In doing so, he demonstratively expanded his residential city compared to his official bishop's seat in the Hanseatic city.
In the church you can find, among other things, a Brüggemann epitaph from 1600, the Marian candlestick from 1322, a seven-armed bronze candlestick from 1444, a bronze baptismal font from 1511 and a wooden cross from the 13th century. A booklet in the church provides more detailed information. The regular city tours usually also visit the church, special church tours take place and can be found in the events calendar. The church was extensively restored and partially redesigned from January to August 2007. Church keepers are present and interesting information folders are available.

  • St. Michaelis Church was built in the 12th century in Romanesque style. Since 1309 it has been the seat of the Eutin collegiate monastery. Around the same time it received a Gothic choir.
