It all started with a border stone that the Austrian stone carver Karl Prantl created for the Austrian-Hungarian border on behalf of Burgenland. He worked in the Roman quarry - outdoors, surrounded by nature. Prantl came up with the idea of inviting international colleagues to work outdoors. In 1959 he invited people to the first sculpture symposium in the quarry. Until the early 1970s, artists from all over the world continued to come together in different places to give form to their ideas and ultimately leave their works on site for the general public.
