The Łyczakowski Cemetery in Lviv is a unique necropolis. About 500,000 people found their final resting place here, including people of merit for Polish science and culture, including Maria Konopnicka, Gabriela Zapolska, Artur Grottger, Stefan Banach and Seweryn Goszczyński, and representatives of Polish national uprisings (mainly veterans of the Kościuszko Uprising, participants of the November and January Uprising).
Established in 1786, the cemetery is one of the oldest European necropolises.
However, you can find tombstones from much earlier years, even from 1675. As early as in the 16th century, the dead of the plague were buried in this place.
Covering an area of 40 hectares, the cemetery was shaped like a park in the mid-19th century. The main authors of these transformations were Karol Bauer and Tytus Tchórzewski.
In fact, visiting the Lviv necropolis resembles a walk in the park - along carefully marked alleys, among ancient, beautiful trees and historic tombstones. The latter, in the case of the Łyczakowski Cemetery, do not show the terror of death, but show it through allegorical figures, for example, the Greek god Thanatos (who ends his life with the dropping of the torch of life of the man he is following), or weeping. The images of the dead carved in stone seem to be asleep or resting. Often their authors are outstanding sculptors. Hence, the Lviv necropolis is a real gallery of tombstone sculpture and architecture.
Since its inception, the Łyczakowski Cemetery has been the resting place of distinguished and significant people, reflecting the multinational character of Lviv - you can find here the graves of not only Poles and Ukrainians, but also Russians, Austrians and Armenians.

The Lychakiv Cemetery is absolutely worth seeing and worth the short walk from the city center Lviv. Unfortunately, the cemetery has only one open entrance. All other entrances / exits were closed, so that the originally planned further migration to the nearby botanical garden was unfortunately canceled.

One of the most beautiful cemeteries in Europe. Unfortunately, currently out of reach of tourist travel. It is depressing when you see pictures of graves that have been dug since 2022.
