Living up to the national park’s bleak reputation, there are a couple of Black Hills on Dartmoor. This particular one, however, bucks the trend slightly. Set amidst a picturesque grass and woodland landscape, the hill affords breathtaking panoramic views over the town of Bovey Tracey, Haytor and beyond.

I hiked in from the direction of Smallacombe Rocks from the Lichen Grove gradually rising to Black Hill. This is a very unassuming outcrop but nonetheless provides fantastic views in all directions, especially in the direction of the Lichen Grove valley and onward to Hound Tor and the Greator Rocks.

To be noted though are a couple of sizeable Cairns that are worth a visit if in the area.
