Just a few yards from the Steens Mountain Wilderness Resort you will cross the rushing “Donner and Blitzen“ River on a concrete bridge. The river got its name in 1864, when soldiers under the command of Colonel George B. Currey crossed the river during thunderstorm, with “Donner“ referring to thunder and “Blitzen“ referring to lightning. Some maps refer to the river just as the Blitzen River.
