In 1978, the crypt was converted into a memorial for the badly damaged town of Breisach. The Breisach sculptor Helmut Lutz created a sandstone wreath of thorns with seven intertwined flower calyxes around the central column of the crypt as a symbol of life. Two emblems symbolize death and new life after the destruction. The shot-to-destruction body of Christ is missing both arms. This figure attached to the column is the remainder of the baroque cross that stood in front of the main portal of the cathedral before the war.
