The Catholic parish church St. Josef was built in the years 1900/1901 in only 18 months construction time and is the largest church of the bishopric of Regensburg since the Middle Ages.

The parish church of St. Josef was built in 1899-1900 by the then rapidly growing Catholic parish of the city of Weiden under the city pastor Max Joseph Söllner (1848-1919). In order to make the construction possible, a Bavaria-wide church collection was even approved at the end of 1896. On June 22, 1899, the bishop came to Weiden for the laying of the foundation stone for the new parish church and for confirmations. On November 11, 1900, the last mass was celebrated in St. Michael, after which the church of St. Joseph could be used. The Bishop of Regensburg, Ignatius von Senestrey, took the official consecration of the church on September 29, 1901 - on the day of St. Michael, the patron saint of the previously simultaneously used parish church. The architecture is based on the Romanesque style. The young Munich painter Franz Hofstötter (1871-1958) and his Weiden employee Wilhelm Vierling (1885-1974) designed it in the so-called Art Nouveau style.
