The Oberschöneweide forest cemetery was a gift from the manufacturer Emil Rathenow to the community of Oberschöneweide. He also financed the construction of the cemetery chapel. The architect and master bricklayer Max Stutterheim was responsible for the planning and construction. The chapel was not completed until 1903/04 after the dedication of the cemetery.
