The statue of Baron Heinrich Friedrich Karl vom und zum Stein (1757-1831) is located in Niederkirchnerstrasse in front of the Berlin House of Representatives. It was created between 1864 and 1869 by Hermann Schievelbein and Hugo Hagen in the style of realism.
The monument bears the inscription "TO THE MINISTER / BARON VOM STEIN / THE GRATEFUL FATHERLAND". The 3.30 m high main figure shows the Prussian statesman and reformer Karl Freiherr vom Stein walking in front of a column. He wears the Order of the Black Eagle on his coat. He leans on his walking stick with his left hand and greets the viewer with his right hand. The figures on the 4.50 m high base represent Stein's virtues of piety, truth, willpower and love of country, the reliefs in between represent the allegories of hope, self-sacrifice, popular uprising and victory.
The Stein monument changed its location several times. It was originally erected on Dönhoffplatz in 1875. During the GDR era, it was removed in 1969 due to the reconstruction of Leipziger Straße and erected in 1981 in place of the former commandant's house on Unter den Linden. After reunification, it was removed again in 2001 due to the reconstruction of the commandant's house and restored. Since 2003, the stone monument has been located to the left of the Prussian State Parliament, the seat of the Berlin House of Representatives.
