Slomškov trg is one of the most charming squares in the city. It is home to the Stolna cerkev cathedral and the statue of Bishop Anton Martin Slomšek, after whom the square, which was created in 1891, was renamed in 1919. Next to it is the basin of the University fountain with a small statue of Korlek. Imposing buildings flank the square: the seat of the university, the Slovensko narodno gledališče theatre and the Maribor post office. The square was originally called Kirchenplatz after the parish church of St. John the Baptist. In 1859 it was renamed Stolni trg (Cathedral Square) when the Slovenian bishop Anton Martin Slomšek brought the seat of the diocese of Lavant from St. Andrä in Carinthia to Maribor. In 1919 the square was then renamed Slomškov trg after the bishop.
