The Germans who advanced in May 1940 were temporarily halted at the Leie in Oeselgem by Walloon regiments of the Belgian army. However, they could only hold out temporarily. In the horrific days of May, all but two residents of the Neerhoek were killed, 52 Belgian soldiers and many more German soldiers. The Neerhoek remains a historical landscape to this day, a witness to the horrors of war.
