In 1280 the former castle was built by Count Walram von Jülich. 1512 it burned down after a powder explosion, but was rebuilt and expanded by Duke Johann. Duke Wilhelm V von Jülich-Kleve-Berg then had the castle expanded into a splendid Renaissance palace between 1558 and 1565.
