Location: San Polo Di Piave, Treviso, Veneto, Italy
The church is located a few kilometers from San Polo di Piave, in the direction of Oderzo, surrounded by vineyards and cultivated fields. It was built near the ancient Roman road that from Oderzo went up the Piave towards Feltre and Trento. The town of San Giorgio was in fact born along the ancient route of the Opitergium-Tridentum, a very important road built in pre-Roman times by the Paleoveneti. Inside it preserves splendid frescoes from the 1400s among which a very special Last Supper stands out.
The archaeological finds made during the restoration work have shown that the town of San Giorgio was already inhabited in Roman times. The remains of an aqueduct were found nearby and it is assumed that the area was an agricultural territory assigned to the veterans of the Roman army.
It seems that San Giorgio, a warrior saint, became the patron saint of this church through the Lombards.
