Lapped by the Lia river, and isolated in the greenery of the surrounding countryside, the Church of the Templars was probably built in the 12th century by the monastic Order of the Knights of the Temple. Formerly inserted in an architectural and administrative unit called Masòn, conceived as a resting place for pilgrims heading to the Holy Land, the Church embodies the balanced charm of Romanesque architecture, essential and simple, to which time and history have given one side taken away, but on the other granted and added, in a succession of more or less happy phases, building interventions and different pictorial testimonies.

The name "Temple" (Templo de Campanea) appears in documents from 1178 and 1304, while the toponym "Masòn" (Mansionis Templi) in 1184, to indicate this typical religious settlement located along the land pilgrimage route to Jerusalem. The Templars settled in this place where one of the ancient Roman routes ran: the Via Opitergium-Tridentum (Oderzo-Trento), very close to the Via Postumia which connected Genoa to Aquileia. When the Order of the Templars was suppressed in 1312, with false accusations and persecutions, the Knights of Malta arrived in Tempio and remained there for around 400 years, transforming the complex from a hospice for pilgrims into an agricultural company. It consisted of a fenced village located at the center of a very large landholding (equipped with houses and mills) and the current town.

XII century, Monastic Order of the Knights of the Temple, - a fascinating place, out of time. Beautiful fragments of inscriptions and frescoes. Is the Second Holy Family represented there ???
