Wyck, situated between the Maas and the current station, was originally a suburb of Maastricht. The district was wedged between the river and the fortifications, which made it somewhat isolated.

After the decision to dismantle the fortifications, Wyck gradually emerged from its isolation. This opened the way for urban development and integration with the rest of Maastricht.

A major urban planning project was the construction of a straight axis, the 'Percée', which connected the old Maas bridge to the railway. This boulevard, consisting of the Wycker Brugstraat and the Stationsstraat, was designed as a metropolitan entrance to the city centre.

The new buildings along this axis were built in an eclectic style, popular in Belgium, using high-quality materials such as Namur bluestone, wood and cast iron. Characteristic elements were turrets, bay windows, columns and stained glass windows.

With the arrival of railway lines to Aachen and Liège and the establishment of the Société Céramique south of Wyck, the district developed into an important industrial and logistical hub.

The municipality of Maastricht encouraged the establishment of Belgian industrialists and financiers in Wyck, which contributed to the international image of the district. Hotels and chic shops established themselves along the new boulevard, making Wyck known as a district of 'see and be seen'.

The closure of factories such as the Société Céramique led to a period of economic decline for Wyck.

In recent years, Wyck has experienced a revival, partly thanks to planning developments in the east of Maastricht. International companies, stylish shops and restaurants have settled in the district, making Wyck bustling again as before.
