The museum, which was founded in 1882 and houses one of the most important collections of Roman finds in northern Italy, was redesigned and modernized in 2018. A large part of the pieces shown here come from excavations in Aquileia.
The three floors of the neoclassical Villa Cassis Faraone exhibit finds from a period between the 2nd century BC and the 6th century AD. On the ground floor there is a collection of statues, portrait busts, grave steles, reliefs and inscriptions that give a good overview of trade, the economy and daily life in Aquileia.
The two upper floors display objects made of ceramics, glass, amber, bronze, coins and jewelry. These are arranged thematically: from the private rooms of a domus to Aquileia as a gateway to the Mediterranean to the production of goods.
In the arcades of the spacious garden, which is reminiscent of the inner courtyard of a Roman villa surrounded by colonnades (peristyle), there is an extensive lapidarium with mosaics, funerary monuments, urns, inscriptions and architectural elements. On some of the funerary monuments you can see ships or amphoras, which indicate Aquileia's function as a trading metropolis.
The mosaic collection consists of some exceptionally beautiful works, which depict, for example, mythological scenes, sea creatures or gladiator portraits. Particularly worth seeing is the so-called bow mosaic (mosaico del fiocco) dating from the 1st century BC: a floor mosaic from a house in Aquileia that shows vine tendrils and ivy branches connected with intertwined ribbons and a bow.
