Historians are of the opinion that the crossing of the Rhine by the Americans in March 1945 over the bridge, the towers of which can still be seen today, was decisive in bringing the Second World War to an end more quickly. Thousands of people were thus saved from further bombing raids.
On the right bank of the Rhine, and thus in Erpel, you can occasionally observe this historical event during the theater in the tunnel.
