Isar (River), Munich
At 300 km long, the Isar is the longest river in Munich. After the Danube, the Inn, and the Main, the Isar is the fourth-longest river in Bavaria.
It originates in Austria in the Karwendel Mountains near Scharnitz. Between Mittenwald and Krün, at river kilometer 251.5, it is dammed by five meters by the Krün weir to reach the Isar Reservoir, 870 m above sea level. From there, it is diverted into a canal to produce energy, leaving a minimum residual flow of between 3 and 4.8 m³/s to Lake Walchen. It then flows through Landshut, Dingolfing, Landau an der Isar, and Plattling, among other places. After a total length of 295 kilometers, it flows into the Danube northeast of Munich and southeast of Deggendorf near Moos. Its two largest tributaries are the Loisach and the Amper. The Isar River has been somewhat renaturalized in the Munich metropolitan area in recent years.
