The tower is located on Las Cañas beach, near the mouth of the Las Cañas stream, after which it is named. It forms part of the coastal fortifications along the Andalusian Mediterranean coast and stands directly on the shoreline.

The tower is constructed of masonry and brick and is shaped like a horseshoe, an elongated semicircle with two slanted spurs or horns at the rear. It is 11 meters high and has a circumference of more than 53 meters. It was built in the second half of the 18th century, during the reign of Charles III.
