    During my first visits to Lønstrup in the 1970s and 1980s, I witnessed the spectacle in Lønstrup Harbor (komoot.com/de-de/highlight/6710724?ref=whd) of fishing boats being pulled onto the beach with steel winches. As is often the case in smaller fishing villages on the Danish North Sea coast, there is and never was an enclosed harbor basin in Lønstrup with moorings where the boats could wait in the water for their next use.

    The powerful engine required for this, and some of the moorings, still exist in and around the old winch house. The massive mast with pulleys, which stood in the sea just outside the beach in front of the harbor buildings to get the boats onto the water, has since been either dismantled or swallowed by the North Sea.

    ``` As luck would have it, my walk took me to the harbor and the old building on a Monday morning, where I met some locals who, as members of a local association, look after the historic facility. Every week, the harbor, the winch house, and the sea rescue house (komoot.com/de-de/highlight/6456535?ref=whd) are in good condition, and minor (cleaning) work is carried out on the old harbor buildings. This gave me the opportunity, after many years (or decades), to enter the engine room again and get up close to the old lady, which I had seen in action.
    The facility can also be viewed from a somewhat greater distance even if no member of the association is present, as the rear part of the building is now used as a public recreation room and is separated from the engine room only by a pane of glass. Visitors and bathers can use the room to warm up and as a shelter from the wind during the colder months. In addition to the opportunity to brew hot drinks for a small fee, the interior, funded by the Nordsøen Oceanarium Hirtshals (komoot.com/de-de/highlight/6531223?ref=whd), offers information about the region's oceans on a monitor and display boards. So it's definitely worth a visit on other days of the week and in the summer! 😉
