Ancient Mulberry Tree in Dokkum

One of the oldest mulberry trees in Europe can be found against the south wall of the Grote Kerk in Dokkum.

The black mulberry tree was planted around 1730-1780 and it is unknown how the tree got here. Another special feature is that this tree grows in the cold North where these trees normally do not grow. The place where the tree now stands used to be dominated by a large monastery with an abbey church and tower. The tree is owned by the municipality of Noardeast-Fryslân.

The right to pick the raspberry-like fruits has been granted to the Dokkum museum and the ripe berries are also used for Bonifatius beer and each year a different restaurant also gets the fruits.
