In 1724 (just over 300 years ago), Prince-Bishop Clemens August I broke ground on the project. His plan: a navigable waterway from Münster via the Ems River to Holland and the North Sea.
Construction Time: For decades, up to 1,500 workers excavated the canal bed by hand.
Final Destinations: The canal never reached its destination. In 1731, it initially ended at Clemenshafen (Neuenkirchen) and was later extended to Maxhafen (Wettringen) by 1771.
