Belgian Monument Heer

Just before the liberation, eleven Belgian and one unknown resistance fighters were arrested in the woods of Rotem, on the Belgian side of the Maas and now a sub-municipality of Dilsen-Stokkem. On 12 September 1944, just a few hours before the liberation, they were shot in the woods where you can find the memorial with information board. Their bodies were found two days later under a layer of marl and branches. In addition to the memorial, there is a reminder of the visit of King Baudouin and the then Dutch queen to the monument and an information board with text, explanation, information about the annual commemoration and a collection of prayer cards that give names and faces to the victims.

Monument in memory of 11 resistance fighters who were shot there after they were discovered and arrested by the Germans while recovering weapons secretly dropped for the resistance (secret Belgian army) during WWII.
