The railway line was opened in 1876 for the section Lennep - Wermelskirchen and completed in 1881 for the entire route to Opladen. The last trains left in 1997.Now, a development association is taking care of maintaining and expanding the route as a cycling and hiking trail. The route is very pleasant to drive: a lot of green, to the west mostly slightly downhill and well developed!Swell:

Brand new: There is a bike bus on weekends, which starts in Opladen and goes to Marinenheide. From there you can then drive back the route.

The route of the "Balkanexpress", completely decommissioned in 1991, on the edge of the Bergisches Land offers ideal conditions for a cycle path. The panoramic cycle path Balkantrasse was opened on the section from Burscheid via Wermelskirchen to Remscheid on 22 April 2012, which was sponsored by Förderverein Balkantrasse Leverkusen e. V. built connection to Opladen followed on 29 May 2014.

Those who prefer to let more roles or go downhill should start in Lennep (train station). The route is u.a. interrupted in Wermelskirchen. There are some jokers have the signs partially twisted, so that one should rely on komoot navigation here.
Otherwise, this route is very nice to drive and scenic attractive.

Great to drive even for families with a trailer. A bit of condition is, you drive the Balkan route uphill, already necessary. At 2-4% slope but you are progressing well. For a break, make sure to stick to Burscheid and stop at the old Burscheider station on a delicious Weltenburger Klosterbräu.

Whether it is more uphill or downhill, of course, depends on the direction in which you drive the Balkan route. But whether to the west or to the east: the slopes are so small that you can hardly feel them. You just roll slowly and enjoy the beautiful surroundings.

Great track that can bring one from the Bergisches Land to close to the Rhine. I recommend driving in the direction of Leverkusen, so it goes downhill well - later you can then go back over the fields and the forest back towards Müngsten. So this will be a great day trip. There is also a crossroads with the Bergisch Panorama Radweg. Here is the opportunity to drive in the direction of Olpe. So countless possibilities for tours. The surface is very good to drive.

The former 'Balkan Express' is today a beautiful panorama Balkan route. Ideal for hiking and cycling. Comfortable rest areas make this route family-friendly. Refreshments are available. Recommended the old train station in Burscheid.
From Lennep to the mouth of the river Wupper, it can be rolled mainly downhill, the other way around are gradients between 2-4 percent. Much joy !

Very nice bike path, the best drive from Lennep, as it is almost only downhill :)

Nice route for cyclists. However, there are also pedestrians who share the Balkan route with cyclists, please always take into consideration here. Unfortunately, there have already been accidents!

Super paved and gentle difference in height make cycling much easier.
