An absolute highlight in the region. Always a beautiful hike. Walking barefoot is a must here 😎😉

Our hiking destination today is the edge of the former sand pit, on the sand dunes, which are up to 40 meters high, near Altdorf.
It was a very nice hike and I can highly recommend it.

90% of the paths marked with a fine line by Komoot can no longer be found because nature has already reclaimed them. On the way to the dune, we turned off the forest path and hiked up an alleged forest path through the natural forest to the top of the dune. Always following the path that no longer exists over moss, roots and tree remains.
On the way back, we took a different "descent" through the dune sand with roots, heels and fallen trees to the forest path.

The sand dunes are hidden in the Nuremberg Reichswald north of Altdorf and are something very special. Here, lush blueberry bushes and heather bushes spread out under a sparse forest of lichen-covered pines, a so-called lichen pine forest. But what is really remarkable are the meter-high layers of sand, which developed into impressive sand dunes in the current municipality of Leinburg during the last ice age due to the drifting sand, thus creating a unique habitat.
The forests and the remaining open sandy areas are valuable habitats for endangered plant and animal species that are adapted to this dry and barren extreme location. The area is therefore now designated as a nature reserve "Lichen-pine forests south of Leinburg" and is part of the "SandAchse Franken" nature conservation project. The area is also important for the drinking water supply of the greater Nuremberg area. The mining of the remaining amounts of sand is therefore over.
