ARMED AND DANGEROUS

In the ecosystem of 17th-century Charles Towne, men with guns became the most successful predators of all.

Gunpowder was more powerful than bows and arrows for hunting, and soon Native Americans and Englishmen alike were stalking their prey with long guns (muskets).

Some species, such as the passenger pigeon and the colorful Carolina parakeet, were hunted to extinction.
