Erected in 1954, the obelisk commemorates the USS Hobson, a destroyer that was used during World War II, including on D-Day. The Hobson sank in 1952 in a devastating accident, a collision with the US aircraft carrier Wasp. All 176 crew members died. The obelisk's engraving lists all 38 states where the victims came from.
