On the RheinBurgenWeg you pass this residential castle from the 19th century. It was built in 1848 as a neo-Gothic quarry stone building in a romantic, idealized style.

The Rathsturm (Rath Tower) was built in 1848 by Cologne Cathedral master builder Ernst Friedrich Zwirner in the neo-Gothic style as a residential tower for the Cologne sugar entrepreneur Johann Jakob von Rath the Younger. It was also called the "Humboldt Tower" because the explorer Alexander von Humboldt had ranked the nearby Rolandsbogen as one of the seven most beautiful views in the world. In 1840, Zwirner rebuilt the Rolandsbogen, which had collapsed the previous year. With the tower and a small observation tower nearby (demolished in 1931), von Rath wanted to surpass the Rolandsbogen, which he had wanted to buy. As early as 1849, a kiosk was built on the Rolandsbogen, as the arch, like the Drachenfels ruins, was an epitome of Rhine Romanticism. The tower is still privately owned.

Addendum 2021/04: The forest surrounding the tower has been cleared. The current owner of the tower, a Cologne physician, has received permission to build apartments for artists here.

In any case an interesting motif and only a few minutes' walk from the Rolandsbogen.
