Please check local regulations for: Duinen Ameland
The Ameland Dunes area is characterized by a vast dune field that stretches across the entire length of the island. In the east and northwest corners, the island is growing, while coastal erosion is occurring near Nes and Buren. The area boasts a wide diversity of environments due to the significant variation in wet versus dry, fresh versus salt, and calcareous versus calcareous soils. In the east, the dunes are relatively calcareous, and the dynamics of drifting sand are high, resulting in a species-rich environment in the Kooiduinen and Oerderduinen dunes. In the west, the lowland peat bog of the Lange Duinen, the heathland, and the lichen-rich, old dune heads near Hollum are particularly noteworthy. The inner dune fringes contain a large area of wet dune heaths with crowberry and bell heather. The area also includes a few small forest complexes consisting of planted coniferous and deciduous forests and spontaneous regrowth.
