Bruchstrasse in Braunschweig, with its Kober windows in historic half-timbered houses, is the center of the red-light district of Lower Saxony's second-largest city.

When I happened to pass by here on a stroll through the city, Bruchstrasse immediately reminded me of the famous Herbertstrasse in Hamburg and, of course, I had to walk through it (without stopping!) out of curiosity; with the permission of my dear wife, who was waiting for me at the entrance with her dog. 😉

There are iron gates at both ends of the street, one of which (towards Wallstrasse) is usually open, while the other (towards Friedrich-Wilhelm-Strasse) always leaves a small passage around a corner.

The history of Bruchstrasse as a place of prostitution goes back to the Middle Ages.

In 1596, there were a few corner pubs on Bruch that served as a hiding place for criminals and those persecuted by the law. The Bruch offered good opportunities to escape from the city due to its peripheral location and lack of visibility as well as its water connections.

Spared from bombing raids during the Second World War, there are still 33 half-timbered houses in Bruchstrasse where prostitution is practiced.
