The Mont Saint-Michel dam connects the mainland to the famous monastery island in the bay between Normandy and Brittany. The old dam, built in 1879, blocked the flow of water and caused sand and silt to build up, rendering the Mont island insular. As part of a major project, the old dam was removed and replaced in 2009 with a new dam that regulates the waters of the Couesnon River. Water is dammed at high tide and released at low tide to flush away the sediment. Since 2014, a modern stilt bridge has led to the Mont, which is used only by shuttle buses, pedestrians, and horse-drawn carriages. This allows Mont Saint-Michel to be completely surrounded by the sea again at certain tides.

The bridge (Passerelle) to Mont Saint Michel is very easy to walk across. There are wide wooden walkways on the left and right. However, it is advisable to walk early in the morning or late in the evening. During the day there are simply too many visitors.

Be careful, pay attention to the tides!

At high tide with a coefficient of over 110 (see tide calendar) access to the island is not possible. You can then get up to about 50m.
