After the Turia flood in 1957, the river was diverted past Valencia. The old riverbed was to be used for a city motorway. Fortunately, this plan did not prevail. Today, the riverbed is a beautiful park with playgrounds, sports facilities, a diverse flora and the "Ciutat de les arts i les sciencies". When Valencians meet there, they still say "vamos al rio", we're going into the river!
