Sotto Ripa, or Ripa Maris, is one of the oldest streets in Genoa, located in the heart of the historic center. Once directly overlooking the sea, it was an important commercial hub, frequented by merchants and sailors. Today, its medieval arches house shops and restaurants, keeping alive the ancient charm of a port city rich in history and traditions.

The porticos of the "Ripa Maris", later called Sottoripa, are the oldest public porticos known to exist in Italy: they were in fact begun between 1125 and 1133 on the initiative of the consuls of the Municipality, who initiated, with a specific council decree, an urban planning operation planned down to the smallest details. At the time of their construction, the sea occupied the area of today's Piazza Caricamento and Via Turati, reaching as far as the foundations of the houses in the area called Ripa. The porticos directly overlooked the port, protected from storm surges by low stone embankments.

Having immediately become one of the most popular places in the city, the street was built specifically to create the spaces necessary for port trade: it housed shops, artisan workshops and warehouses in which goods were stored that had just been unloaded from ships or were waiting to be shipped overseas.
