The Glaspalais was opened as a modern department store in 1935 in the middle of Heerlen City and is one of the world's 1000 most noteworthy objects of 20th century architecture. After a temporary decline, it was renovated in accordance with the monument and reopened as a cultural center. Special feature is the curtain almost completely glazed façade; In contrast, the statics are ensured by concrete columns (distance approx. 6 m) in the largely open interior. According to reports, the building is almost without heating.

In the centre of Heerlen, a special building was built in the 1930s: the Glaspaleis. The building was incredibly modern and innovative for its time. The Glaspaleis was originally built as a fashion house. Architect Frits Peutz designed the modernist building on behalf of entrepreneur Peter Schunck. Due to its height and large glass sections, the building was soon popularly called ‘the Glaspaleis’.
