The following inscription greets us on the door of the chapel:

“Dear pilgrim, dear wanderer, we are standing here on a lonely place, a saint, a reverent place, where in 1620, during the terrible plague time of the Thirty Years' War, the last hermit sacrificed his life for those suffering from the plague. Every day he went to the villages with a jug filled with goat's milk to care for his plague sufferers, whom he soon followed in death. As a sign of this terrible time, when half of the people of Spabrücken and Schöneberg had died out, this holy, temperate man left us this cross carved by hand, called the plague cross. The Mother of God Chapel was built on the foundations of this hermit. We bow with reverence to this holy place, we bow to our ancestors who had to endure this difficult time in constant famine, in times of war, connected with these terrible diseases and early death. You should always be a role model for all of us. Pilgrims, stay a few moments in thought of this place to consider our short earthly existence with our worries and needs. "

Right next door is a Way of the Cross, which depicts the stations of Jesus Christ's suffering. At fourteen beautifully designed wooden crosses, on which there is usually a plastic representation of the respective stations of the cross, you can pause and take time to pray.

From there, many beautiful paths lead in all directions. It is most beautiful up to the Weissenfels. The Hermitage is historically significant, but the Way of the Cross is closed with a ribbon, why 🤷‍♂️?

The entrance to the Hermitage is located between Schöneberg and Spabrücken, directly next to the country road, marked with a simple wooden sign. In a clearing in the middle of a pine forest stands a small chapel, next to it a large, richly decorated wooden cross. The chapel commemorates the last hermit who sacrificed his life here for those suffering from the plague.
