The 'kanaaldijk' is actually the towpath. A towpath or towing path is a path along a canal or river that was used to pull ships forward. This pulling was called towing and was done in unfavorable wind and against the current. Usually, towing was done by a horse with a handler, but sometimes it was also done by human power. Large cargo ships were towed by multiple horses. Nowadays, towpaths serve as service roads for transport and maintenance logistics of the various facilities next to and on the waterway, and in many cases also as cycle paths and footpaths.
