Obelisk fountain - market fountain, Würzburg
The obelisk fountain - the center of the lower market square in Würzburg
Another impressive fountain in Würzburg is the obelisk fountain. The classicist fountain, which today forms the center of the Würzburg market square, was built in 1802. It was planned by the architect Johann Andreas Gärtner. Local shell limestone was chosen as the material.
The structure of the fountain is quite simple, an approximately 15m high obelisk (a free-standing stone column) mounted on a square base (or pedestal). A fountain bowl is attached to this base to the east and west.
What's the story behind the reliefs on the fountain?
The fountain's originally simple pedestal was later decorated with reliefs in 1881. These were made based on drawings by Johann Martin von Wagner and attached to the north and south sides of the base.
The reliefs are intended to paint a picture of the hustle and bustle and togetherness on the market square. The reliefs show two women busily transporting goods.
    Interesting facts for visitors:
The obelisk fountain on the lower market square is now in use mainly during the summer months.
Spotlights are installed around the fountain, which provide breathtaking lighting at night. In addition, the obelisk fountain is covered with light nets around Christmas time, which create a great ambience.
The obelisk fountain is not only very beautiful, but also has an interesting history. The fountain is intended to commemorate the Napoleonic era under Grand Duke Ferdinand of Würzburg. Between 1806 and 1813 Napoleon visited the city three times.
