The station was opened in 1909 by the Great Western Railway on the Chiltern Main Line, which was built in 1852, between Snow Hill and London's Marylebone station, but only as a temporary structure. It was finally completed in 1914. However, the station had no platforms on the CML at the time, only terminal platforms for regional trains terminating from the south, such as from Leamington Spa or Stratford-upon-Avon. There was also a freight yard on the western side of the tunnel portal. Initially, a connection to the then main station Curzon Street was planned, but construction was started but never completed because the Great Western Railway was forced to build its own station and decided to route the line via Snow Hill. The unfinished viaduct towards Curzon Street can still be seen today.
