Nowadays the building is used as a retirement home with the former name "Hospital zum Heiligen Geist". The largest parts were built around 1760. The ground on which the building stands was previously that of Rendsburg Castle. However, this was demolished in 1718.

The Heilig-Geist-Hospital was built in 1760 as the rear part of a barracks complex. It stands on the site of the Rendsburg Castle, which was demolished in 1718, and was the medieval Reinholdsburg of the Counts of Schauenburg. A parallel front building of the barracks was demolished in 1898. The Heilig-Geist-Hospital was designed as an elongated, two-story brick building with 25 axes and a hipped roof. The front is divided into five-axis sections by wall strips, and its center is emphasized by a gabled dwelling. The gable field bears the royal monogram of Frederick V and the date of construction.

The Heilig-Geist-Hospital served as a garrison hospital until 1878 and was used as a pioneer barracks after the end of Schleswig-Holstein as a Prussian province. Today the building houses the "Hospital zum Heilgen Geist" senior citizens' home.
