In the early nineteenth century, Drenthe still largely an isolated region. The wasteland that however much of the province still covered slowly but surely developed.
The isolation of Drenthe was finally broken in the twentieth century. After the veins were now also the extensive heath complexes mined. In addition to the traditional small-scale farming on sandy soils arose larger companies in the new mining areas.
