The Palacio de la Merced was the monastery of the Mercedarian Order in Cordoba. In a niche above the portal there is a figure of the Virgin Mary holding the iron shackles of freed prisoners in her hands (María de las Mercedes, Mary of Mercy). The current baroque church with monastery buildings and cloister dates from the first half of the 18th century. After the dissolution of the monasteries in Spain in the 1830s, it was a hospice. In 1960, the provincial administration moved in here.
