The circular route through our holiday resort of Caniçal first led us (1.77 km uphill) to the town center with the parish church "Igreja Matriz do Caniço" and a small, shady square. If you want to avoid the climb, you can also take the bus to the center and from there mostly just walk downhill.
Caniço is one of the oldest communities in Madeira, founded in 1438/40. The first stone of today's parish church was laid on August 2, 1779 and the new church was ceremoniously blessed on October 28, 1783. The paving in front of the entrance portal, typical for Madeira, with local pebbles from 1932 is remarkable. The square in front of the church invites you to linger over coffee, Bola do Caco or fruit from the local farmer (small farmer's market on Saturday) or one of the cafes/kiosks.
Then we continued through the town and through 'gardens' to the Christo Rei statue. From here you have a beautiful (but not necessarily spectacular) view of the Atlantic; quite a lot of tourists here. If you are travelling by car, you may have to wait a while for a free parking space.
If you are on holiday in Caniço, you should definitely take a look at the place.
