The characteristic pink color of the Granite Coast is caused by the feldspar in the rock. About 300 million years ago, the area lay deep beneath the Hercynian mountain range in a magma chamber. Slow cooling, tectonic uplift, and subsequent weathering eventually exposed the granite masses. Over millions of years, erosion by sea, wind, and rain shaped the typical landscapes with large, isolated granite boulders and bizarre rock formations.
