The Holtwicker Wacholderheide (often pronounced similarly to the nearby Holzwickede/Holtwick) is a nature reserve of approx. 12 hectares on the edge of the Hohe Mark Nature Park southwest of Haltern am See-Holtwick. Protected as a nature reserve since 1936. Historic agricultural landscape (former forest pasture and sod management). Overuse acidified the soils, whereupon heather and juniper spread. Old, contiguous juniper stand, broom and bell heather, as well as oak-birch forest remnants. Habitat for rare ground-nesting birds such as the woodlark and heat-loving reptiles.
