Behind the town hall there is a meaningful memorial to 400 victims of the Franco dictatorship. After the coup in 1936 and later, 400 people from Donostia / San Sebastián were murdered.

It was only in 2014 that a left-wing city government erected a memorial to the victims of the war and the Francoist dictatorship. It can be found behind the town hall, next to the yacht club. The scientific society Aranzadi, which is responsible for excavating mass graves from the war in the Basque Country, estimates that more than 300 people were executed in Donostia, on Ondarreta beach or at the Bidebieta shooting range. Various bodies from the war were recovered from the iron bridge (Puente de Hierro, near Anoeta) after construction work in 2009. According to contemporary witnesses, a mass grave is also suspected on Ulía Mountain, where a memorial event is held every year for those who were mostly extra-legally executed. An inglorious memory can be found in the municipal cemetery of Polloe, where a fascist monument still stands today, a large cross with an inscription, surrounded by Guardia Civil graves from the post-war period.
