The church was built in the 11th century by the monks of the Abbey of Cluny (F) and the associated monastery was the first and only monastery in the Vaud Alps.
After the Reformation, the church became Protestant in 1555.
The associated monastery was demolished and the neighboring castle was built on the foundations of the destroyed monastery 10 years later.
